Evernorth trades as XRPN for the first time and names a former Coinbase investment chief to run an active XRP treasury; Iran calls the US reply on Hormuz insufficient and stops responding; Brent swings between $103 and $106 on Trump's Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire claim; and a tanker is hit by a drone off Oman.

Where things stand

Evidence through Oct 12, 9:45 AM ET

XRP spot: $1.42, Coinbase spot price, Monday Oct 12, about 9:45 am ET; up about 2.7% from Saturday's $1.38 Coinbase stamp (desk calc). Evidence verified through Oct 12, 9:45 am ET.

All eight gauges hold. No Treasury par close or Brent settle has printed since Friday's readings, December Brent $104.72 and the 30-year at 5.60%, so the Macro Backdrop and Bond Stress counts stay at zero. A tanker struck by a drone near Sohar, Oman keeps the Hormuz count at zero. XRP ETFs start a new week with no print yet. Tap any gauge for its basis, criteria and math.

  • Yen Carry: worsening arrow holds. USD/JPY about 158.6 Monday on Trading Economics, about 1.4 yen under the 160 close trigger.

Index to the ranked items

The first listed XRP treasury opened near its Friday close, and its new CIO is tasked with active management of holdings, which is not the same as buying XRP.

The diplomatic route the base case leaned on just narrowed, with no reopening date and the US strike pause tied to Nov 3.

The post knocked oil toward $103 overnight before the tape recovered, and neither Moscow nor Kyiv has confirmed a working halt.

What changed

Since the prior brief
  • XRPN traded as Evernorth for the first time, about $17.75 shortly after the open against Friday's $17.09 close, and the company named former Coinbase Asset Management co-CIO Hugo Jeandesboz chief investment officer.
  • Iran called the US reply to its Hormuz conditions "insufficient" and said it is no longer responding, after saying last week an answer would come within days.
  • Trump declared an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday; Zelenskyy said Russian strikes on energy sites continued and the Kremlin has not confirmed it. Brent fell toward $103 overnight, then traded about $105 to $106.7 by the US morning.
  • A tanker was struck by a drone near Oman's Sohar anchorage, crew evacuated; monitored X accounts show UKMTO warnings numbered 162 to 165 over the weekend.
  • Houthis hit the passenger terminal at Riyadh's airport Saturday, and Trump said the US "may" join Saudi strikes on them.
  • XRP rose to about $1.42 from $1.38 Saturday; USD/JPY moved to about 158.6 on a Japanese holiday.
  • Claim tracker: 9 new claims; 24 open verdicts re-tested and 4 moved to verified: Evernorth's Q2 order-book figures, Iran-Oman progress on a Hormuz route, the H.R. 10357 mining and staking exclusion, and the Jazan refinery attack.

1Evernorth trades as XRPN and names a former Coinbase CIO

High✓ Verified

XRPN traded $17.75 at 9:42 am ET, up about 3.9% from Friday's $17.09 close (ChartExchange; StockAnalysis; desk calc), its first session since Evernorth's merger with Armada Acquisition Corp. II closed Oct 9. It had traded $18.20 premarket and $18.57 after hours Friday (StockAnalysis; The Block).

At 8:00 am ET Evernorth named Hugo Jeandesboz chief investment officer. He was co-CIO and head of Solutions at Coinbase Asset Management and earlier Coinbase's lead derivatives trader. The release gives him treasury allocation, liquidity management and active management of XRP holdings (GlobeNewswire). The Block reports the company plans lending, liquidity provision and other yield strategies to raise XRP per share, and puts the holding at about 473 million XRP. The release also corrects the shares issued at closing to 1,078,614 from 663,510.

What it does not say: that Evernorth is buying XRP. No purchase or cash deployment is announced, and the release states no XRP balance. Active management is not new demand: lending or providing liquidity with existing XRP can add to tradable supply rather than remove it. The closing bell ceremony is Oct 14.

2Iran calls the US Hormuz reply insufficient and stops responding

High✓ Verified

Mohsen Rezaei, identified by The National as head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, told state media that Tehran sent seven conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz about two weeks ago and that the US reply falls short: "We are no longer in the process of responding to the Americans. They have given their reply, and we consider it insufficient" (The National, Oct 11). He said Washington accepted some conditions, others remain unresolved, and the strait will not open to the US and no negotiations will occur until they are met. The US has rejected Iran's proposal for joint Iranian-Omani management of the waterway, insisting on free passage under international law.

That reverses last week's tone, when Foreign Minister Araghchi said Tehran was reviewing the US response and would reply within days (Al Jazeera). The seven conditions have not been published.

Why it ranks: the Hormuz base case leaned on talks, and the channel is now stalled while Trump's pledge of no US strike on Iran before Nov 3 stands. No new transit data in this window; the last Reuters count on record is 7 on Oct 6.

3Brent whipsaws on Trump's Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire claim

High✓ Verified

Trump posted Sunday: "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed" (Al Jazeera). Zelenskyy said the deal was news to him and that Russian drones and glide bombs kept hitting energy sites, including a Kharkiv power plant Sunday evening; there was no immediate Kremlin confirmation (Al Jazeera). It follows Friday's US license for Russian diesel; Trump said Russia would supply more than 300,000 tonnes of gasoil, with 500,000 more in November (IranWire, citing Reuters).

Oil moved hard overnight: December Brent fell about $1.54 to $103.18 and ICE gasoil about 3% (IranWire, citing Reuters). By the US morning it had recovered to about $105.3 on Investing.com and $106.7 on Trading Economics, against Friday's $104.72 settle. A spread of more than $3 across sources in one morning is why the desk counts settles, not intraday prints.

Why it ranks: a working energy ceasefire plus Russian diesel would ease the product squeeze that held Brent above $100 all last week. Unconfirmed by either combatant, it is a headline, not supply. The Macro Backdrop count stays at zero until a settle below $100.

4Tanker struck by a drone near Oman's Sohar anchorage

High✓ Verified

UKMTO said a tanker was struck by a drone in the vicinity of Sohar anchorage, Oman, reclassifying the report as an attack once the drone was confirmed. The vessel was damaged, all crew were safe and local authorities helped evacuate them (Reuters via Arab News, published late Oct 11). UKMTO named no vessel and no attacker. Sohar sits on Oman's Gulf of Oman coast, outside the strait itself.

Monitored X accounts show UKMTO warnings numbered 162 to 165 and an advisory between Oct 10 and 12; the desk could read the details of the Sohar incident only. The supertanker hit off the UAE on Oct 9, named by two sources as GEM NO.2, still has no official attribution.

A new strike keeps the Hormuz improve count at zero.

5Houthis hit Riyadh airport terminal; Trump says US "may" join

Medium✓ Verified

Houthis struck a passenger terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday, injuring several people according to Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority; operations were suspended, the site evacuated and flights halted (The Media Line). It followed Thursday's strike on the same airport that killed three. Asked about joining Saudi strikes on the Houthis, Trump said "We may. We're going to look at it," adding that a decision would come quickly (The Media Line).

Why it ranks: US strikes on the Houthis would open a front separate from Iran itself, and Trump's no-strike pledge before Nov 3 named Iran, not Yemen. No Saudi oil facility damage was reported in this window.

6USD/JPY nears 158.6 on a Japanese holiday

Medium✓ Verified

USD/JPY traded about 158.6 Monday on Trading Economics, from 158.31 there Friday, with Japan on a national holiday and US banks closed (Trading Economics). That is about 1.4 yen from the 160 close that fires Yen Carry ELEVATED (desk calc). Trading Economics' Friday close differs from PoundSterlingLive's 157.82, a 0.5 yen source gap, so this run's tile is labelled by provider. The JGB 10-year sits at 3.016%, unchanged on the holiday.

Trading Economics notes the yen is near the level that previously prompted Tokyo to intervene; no new Ministry of Finance comment was located. Japan's August TIC data, which could test the open claim that Japan sold Treasuries to fund its intervention, is due around mid-October.
